Over the past few years Cambodia has increasingly become a destination on every traveler’s list of “must do” countries and we have seen a steady increase in visitor numbers. Time and time again we hear from visitors that they were initially drawn to Cambodia by the wonders of Angkor Wat and the temples but then, when they got here, they fell in love with what must be amongst the friendliest people in the world even though they live in grinding poverty. As a result of their experiences here  many people want to help in some way, either by making a donation or returning as a volunteer in one of our projects. For many it is a life changing experience. 

Cambodia has a dark recent history through the Khmer Rouge period of the 1970s and 80s and the civil war that followed. Children were separated from their parents and many of the parents killed. The country was destroyed and is only now beginning to recover and rebuild itself. Cambodia is still ranked amongst the poorest countries of the world and there are terrible examples of poverty. Yet the spirit of the people is amazing. Even when they have nothing they will always smile and share what little they may have. 

It was against this background that the Cambodian Orphan Fund (COF) came to be. 

COF is a young and dynamic organisation registered in Cambodia as a Cambodian not –for- profit, NGO (non- governmental organization). It’s main purpose is to create projects that will help Cambodian people break the poverty cycle and help themselves to a positive future. ‘Feed a hungry person today and they will be hungry tomorrow. Give a hungry person skills and they will feed themselves tomorrow.”  This is our guiding principle. 

We are based in Siem Reap, and it is our policy, as we grow, to employ bright Cambodians who are highly motivated but cannot find fulfilling work. We do not employ expats on high international salaries. This helps us to ensure that not only are we capacity building in Cambodia but we are also ensuring a high percentage of each donation goes to our projects. In addition we have been actively encouraging our growing group of supporters from around the world to set up organisations in their home countries to raise funds and recruit volunteers to support and help expand our work.
